Note: Active Contacts are part of our new pricing model introduced on March 2, 2026. Plan availability may vary by region, so we recommend visiting our Pricing page to see which options are currently offered in your area. At this time, the new pricing model, including Active Contact–based billing, is available to accounts created on or after March 2, 2026. If your account was created before that date, you won’t be able to switch just yet. We’re working on expanding access and will notify you as soon as it becomes available. |
What’s considered a contact? And what is an Active Contact?
A contact is a person who has interacted with your business account through an automation via a channel connected to Manychat:
- Sends you a DM
- Comments on your post
- Replies to your story
- Engages with your automation in any other way
You can also add contacts via imports or API.
So, in short: your follower count is not the same as your Active Contact count.
An Active Contact is a contact who has interacted with you through Manychat during your current billing month. Only contacts who engage during the billing cycle count toward your monthly Active Contact limit.
You can track your Active Contact count in the Insights section of your dashboard. There, you’ll see the Active Contacts number along with a graph showing trends for your selected date range.
How many Active Contacts are included in each plan?
The number of Active Contacts included depends on your subscription plan:
- Free: 25 Active Contacts per month
- Essential: 250 Active Contacts per month
- Pro: 2,500 Active Contacts per month
- Business: 7,500 Active Contacts per month
- Advanced: 25,000 Active Contacts per month
What happens if I reach my Active Contacts limit without upgrading? Will my automations stop working?
If you exceed your plan’s Active Contact limit, don’t worry, your automations will continue running; they will not stop immediately.
Instead, overage charges will be applied automatically based on your plan:
- Essential: $0.10 per additional Active Contact
- Pro: $0.05 per additional Active Contact
- Business: $0.025 per additional Active Contact
- Advanced: Custom overage pricing
Overage fees are automatically added to your next bill; no action is required on your part.
You’ll receive notifications when you reach 70%, 90%, and 100% of your contact limit, so you have time to decide whether to upgrade.
If your account continues to grow well beyond your plan’s maximum cap without upgrading, automations may eventually pause. To avoid interruptions, we recommend upgrading once you consistently approach your limit.
Will multiple interactions from the same person count more than once?
No. If the same person messages you multiple times within the same billing month, they still count as one Active Contact for that period.
| Note: If someone contacts you on multiple platforms (for example, Instagram and TikTok), they may be counted separately depending on how those accounts are connected in Manychat. However, if the same person uses the same phone number or email address across platforms, Manychat may recognize them as a single contact — meaning they would count as one Active Contact, even if they interact with you on different channels. |
What happens to my contacts who aren’t active that month?
Contacts who don’t interact with you during a given billing month will remain stored in your Contacts list; they just won’t count toward your Active Contact total for that month.
This means you can continue growing your audience over time, while your costs only increase as more people actively engage with you.
Do my Active Contacts reset each month?
Yes. Active Contacts are calculated on a monthly basis, even if you’re on an annual plan.
Your Active Contact count resets at the start of each billing cycle. If you exceed your monthly limit, any overage charges are billed monthly.
I manually imported contacts and saw them reflected in my billing. What should I do?
Manually imported contacts do not automatically count as Active.
A manual import is when you intentionally upload contacts into Manychat, typically by uploading a CSV file.
This is different from contacts being automatically added through natural interactions on your connected platforms (like someone sending a DM or replying to a story).
They only count toward your Active Contact total if they send or receive messages through:
- Manychat Automation
- Manychat AI
- Broadcasts
- Live Chat
If imported contacts engaged through one of these methods during your billing cycle, they would count as Active for that month.
