When adding images to your Messenger automation, whether through the Gallery, Card, or Image Block, it's important to consider the aspect ratio and resolution for the best display across different devices.
Gallery and Card images
-
Aspect ratio: The Gallery and Card images use the same aspect ratio of 1.91:1 (width: height). This applies across the Messenger mobile app, Facebook chat box, and Messenger browser version.
-
Recommended size: For optimal clarity, use images with a resolution of 909x476 px. This size ensures your images look sharp and professional on most devices.
-
Minimum acceptable size: If you don't have images of the recommended resolution, using a size of at least 500x262 px will suffice. Most viewers won't notice a significant drop in quality at this size.
Image Block images
-
Dynamic aspect ratio: Images sent via the Image Block feature have a dynamic aspect ratio. The general rule is that the closer your image is to a perfect square, the better it will appear. Square images are larger and more prominent.
-
Recommended size: A resolution of 900x900 px is ideal for Image Block images, as it ensures your media appears bigger and sharper.
-
Minimum acceptable size: If you don't have a 900x900 px image, one that is at least 500x500 px will still display well.
-
Aspect ratio flexibility: It's perfectly fine to send images that aren't perfectly square, such as 900x500 px. However, avoid images where one side is more than double the length of the other, as this can lead to awkward cropping or scaling.
How images appear on different devices
- Messenger app (mobile and browser):
- Images can vary in display from a 1:2 to 2:1 aspect ratio (width: height).
- Tall images: Anything taller than 1:2 will be cropped at the top and bottom.
- Wide images: Anything wider than 2:1 will be cropped on the left and right sides.
- Desktop browser version:
- Wide images: These are displayed as wide as the contact's screen allows. Large images are automatically downscaled, maintaining their proportions.
- Tall images: Tall images will be cropped if their height exceeds 2.2 times their width.
- Facebook chat window:
- Images are displayed almost in their original aspect ratio.
- Very long/tall images: These will appear very small, so it's best to avoid using them.
File size limitation
Please note that, according to Facebook's documentation, images larger than 10MB cannot be displayed in Messenger, though they might still be uploaded to the Manychat automation.
