The Instagram Story Mention Reply trigger automatically starts a conversation in Manychat when someone mentions your account in their Instagram story.
Whenever a user tags your profile in their story, the trigger activates and launches the messaging flow you’ve set up. This allows you to instantly acknowledge the mention, thank them, share a special offer, or guide them into the next step of your customer journey.
It’s a powerful way to engage with people who are already talking about your brand, strengthen relationships, and make the most of user-generated content, all without needing to reply manually every time.

Set up the Instagram Story Mention Reply trigger
- Open your Manychat account and go to Settings.
- Select Instagram from the list of channels.
- Scroll down to the Story Mention Reply.
- From here you can either create a new automation using the trigger, or select an existing automation.
- To create a new one, click the Create New Reply button.
- The Flow builder opens, and the User mentions you in their Story is already added to the automation.
- Click on this node to set up the trigger.
- In the panel that opens on the left, click once more on the User mentions you in their Story block.
- Here you can set up the conditions for the trigger:
- Select if you want to reply to every mention from the same user, or only one mention within the 24-hour period.
- You can select to delay sending the message to make the reply seem more natural.
- Additionally, you can select to react with the ❤️ to the message.
- Select if you want to reply to every mention from the same user, or only one mention within the 24-hour period.
- Switch the toggle on at the bottom of the panel to turn on the trigger. This will not yet activate the automation.
- Next, edit the message you want to send as a reply to the mention. Click on the Story mention Reply node to make changes.
- Make sure the Send within 24 hours option is selected. Since the user already opted in to receive messages from you, you have to communicate with them within the allowed 24-hour period.
- You can select to simply reply with a text message, or add a button, Quick Reply, link, or any other available content block.
- After configuring the first reply, you can continue building the rest of your automation as needed.
- To see how it works, you can click the Preview button at the top of the Flow Builder.
- You can choose to preview the automation either in Manychat or directly on Instagram.
- The second option lets you see everything exactly as your audience will experience it. Click the arrow icon next to the Preview to select the preview mode.
- Once you’ve finished setting up the automation, click the Set Live button.

Select an existing automation as an Instagram Story Mention reply
- Open your Manychat account and go to Settings.
- Select Instagram from the list of channels.
- Scroll down to the Story Mention Reply.
- Click Select Existing.
- In the pop-up that opens, select the automation that you want to use as a story mention reply and click Pick This Automation.
Disabling the Instagram story mention reply automation
If you need to disable the automation or select a new one, follow these steps:
- Open Settings and select the Instagram channel from the list.
- Scroll down to the Story Mention Reply.
- Click the X button next to the name of the automation to remove it.
Once you do this, the automation will be stopped and won’t be triggered again. You can add it back by clicking on the Select Existing and choosing it again from the list of available automations. Click Pick This Automation to add it.
